3 Rules for Buying Kids' Shoes
The "Thumb" Rule
Always leave about half an inch (width of your thumb) of space between the longest toe and the front of the shoe. Kids' feet grow fast.
Infant vs. Walker
For babies (0-12m), sizes are often grouped (e.g., 6-9 months). Soft soles are best. Once they start walking (Toddler), switch to sizes 4C+ with firm soles.
When to switch to Adult Sizes
Once a child outgrows a Size 7Y, they move to Men’s Size 7 or Women’s Size 8.5.
Understanding Kid's Shoe Sizes (C vs. Y)
Children's shoe sizing can be the most confusing. It's broken down into several stages, and our tool helps you navigate them.
- Infant (0-12 Months): Sizes 0C to 4C for pre-walkers.
- Toddler (1-4 Years): Sizes 4C to 10C for early walkers.
- Little Kid (4-8 Years): Sizes 10.5C to 3Y.
- Big Kid / Youth (8-12 Years): Sizes 3.5Y to 7Y.
Important: A "Big Kid" (Youth) Size 7Y is roughly the same physical length as a Men's Size 7. If your child has outgrown size 7Y, they are ready for adult sizing.
